London's history was punctuated by several episodes that reshaped perceptions of the city and its relationship to the kingdom.  We have selected for special attention the political crisis that culminated in the outbreak of civil war in 1642, the restoration of monarchy nearly twenty years later, the great fire of 1666, the Exclusion Crisis of 1679-81, the Sacheverell riots against Protestant dissent of 1712 and the South Sea Bubble.
