The Entry of Marie de' Medici, 1639
This hand-colored engraving from Jean Puget de la Serre, L'Historie de l'Entree de la Reine Mere dans la Grande Bretagne (London, 1639) is the earliest known illustration of a royal entry through London. Note the London livery companies watching from the viewing stands and the additional spectators crowded into the windows of houses flanking the processional route.
